What True Transformation Looks Like

wednesdays with wayne Jul 08, 2020

Let’s look at what true transformation looks like. I promise, I’ll only use the “butterfly” analogy once and it’ll be quick!

Transformation… trans-formation. What does that even mean? More important, what does it mean to you?

Transform has its roots in Latin and French and trans literally means across or beyond and form is the shape of something or the way it looks or appears. When you transform, you end up being different.

What's interesting to me is that when I've worked with organizations, teams, individuals, there's almost an allergic reaction to the word change. They’ll say, “Oh, I know we need to change.” And then they hold their breath. They know that doing the same thing over and over, they're going to get the same results. They know that, you know, they need to do something different, “but does it have to be change?” And so it makes me laugh a little bit as a consultant, as a coach, as a, as a breakthrough coach and powerful presence mentor that even those engaged in high performance will say things like, “that's guidance is all good, but do I have to change?”

Here’s a riddle for you.

Do you know what happens if you don't move out of your comfort zone?

This is a big question, right?

It's a, it's a riddle I posed to a group I ran recently. In my powerful presence masterclass, I posed this riddle to the group:

What happens if you don't push out of your comfort zone?

Absolutely nothing.

You keep doing what you do and you’ll begin to wither away. Comfortably.

My goal is to help you become comfortable uncomfortable as you to a place of, “Wow! I've never done that before. Wow! I've never felt that way. Wow! I've never learned that thing. Wow! I've never tried that thing.”

Do The New!

If you don’t venture into doing something new, then you get the results you've gotten and you're in the life you have instead of the life, you know, you could have, or the life that you actually want.

That is a big deal because so many of us know that there's more. We want more. We want to be more. We want to have more. We want to do more. We want to serve more greatly. You can't do the more thing from where you are. You have to be more in order to give more.

Back to this transformation thing. True transformation happens by taking on and practicing something new.

Over time, with taking on a new practice you lay down a new pathway for yourself. And over time, amazingly, that turns you from a cute little caterpillar, into a beautiful butterfly. You transform you change shape because in five years you will not be the same person you are today. The trick is to do that deliberately, actively, and positively. Stepping into owning your life allows you to own the transformation; that’s when it becomes really fun. Personally, I look forward to it. I look for ways that I can change and grow every day.

I step into the uncomfortable on purpose every day.

And I would challenge you to do the same.
