What Do I Want to Do?
Jan 13, 2026“I don’t know, I never think about what I want because I have to do all the things that I have to do.”
I hear that all too often and it’s kind of sad, actually.
When I think about the creative energy that is uniquely your gift and you’ve parked it for “someday,” I just want to do something to snap you out of your trance.
It’s a new day. We’re still at the beginning of a new year. And what’s missing? Two things! Two things are missing, even if you’re already super successful, you can fine tune these two things:
1) Permission – you have permission to think as outlandishly as you want. You have thoughts and dreams that no one else has, not the way you do. So, you not only have permission to express them, I’m urging you to do so.
People who know me expect my shirts to be bright and colorful. They say things like, “well, you can pull that off, but I ….” They trail off, their voices fade. I “pull it off” because wearing bright colors makes me happy. The bottom line is that I give myself permission to be happy.
Start there.
2) Clarity is the second thing. It’s funny. So many people I talk with get vague when talking about what they want. “I’d like to make more money.” Or, “someday I’d like a new car” or house or partner or job or hobby or, whatever it is. How specific can you be about what you really, truly desire?
Clarity counts. Specificity matters. Can you see, feel, hear, taste, and smell the thing you said you wanted? Do you know what you feel like having or doing that thing?
Want to and get to are key points here. They’re the anti “have-to” focus that most people start with. They’re focused on a problem to get through before they focus on what the outcome is that they really want.
Think about how you start your day. Is it, “ugh, what do I have on my to-do list today?” Or is it, “wow, look at what I get to do today!”
You choose.
Give yourself permission.
Get clear about what you truly desire.
Then, take your best next step – just one step – to get there.
(By the way, that’s an en-dash, not an em-dash. It may not even be the proper use, it’s just that I write all of my own blogs. ChatGPT is known for the em-dash and, while those may show up in my writing, I’m not using AI in my work. I’m pointing this out so that if you see a hyphen or other marks, it’s me! You’ll always get the real me!)
So yeah. You have permission. Get clear. Then, take that first step – the best next step. Just one at a time. They compound and then, you’re doing what you want to do!!!
Keep making your magic.
Let me know what your Next Big Next is.
