We trade pieces of ourselves for the things we think we want. 

We trade our time and skills for money. 

We trade our time and attention for entertainment. 

And we trade our identities for a sense of belonging. 

All of that leaves us with a sense of longing at work, at home, and in the world. We want more. We want something that feels meaningful.

Managers and leaders, take note! Each of your team members wants to feel that what they’re doing is worthwhile, that it contributes to something larger, and that ultimately, their efforts are meaningful.

How will they know that they and their work matter? You will tell them. 

As you read this, you’d be surprised how so much of the simple stuff gets missed in both management and in parenting. Leaders, managers, and even parents assume that those that they lead know that they’re important. 

It’s been said that we humans are here to witness the lives of other humans. As people around you engage in the worst trade ever, giving up their humanity in trade for conformity, it’s important to be the beacon of light for them. Let them know you see them. Let them know you appreciate their efforts. 

Today, as you read this, think of someone you could connect with, let them know you see them and that you value them. Remind them that what they’re doing matters.

What YOU are doing matters. You make a difference.
