What does it take to create an identity of success? Even if you already have a sense of success, I know you’re aching for more. You’re here, reading this, so you’re someone who wants to do more, to have more, or maybe to become more.

What is success, really? 

From its Latin roots, it was essentially synonymous with outcome. Success was defined as the outcome that follows your movement. Only later did we narrow the meaning as something positive.

That means, everything you’ve done produced a success. By definition, an outcome following your actions. Everything you have, for better or worse, if you own your actions, you’re owning your success.

Now, step from there into the positive. 

Think about a past outcome you can claim as a positive success. Pick just one thing – the first thing that comes to mind when you think about a personal success you’ve had.

Questions to consider: 

• How did you get there
• Think about specifics. What did you actually do to create that success? It wasn’t a quick leap, was it! 
• Think back to the first step you took.

Here’s what you likely did: You had an idea. You thought about it. It made you smile. You told yourself it was kind of unreasonable. You negotiated with yourself and decided to go for it anyway. You saved, you practiced, you took new steps toward the thing you wanted. These are known as “successive approximations.” 

You moved through the discomfort of not knowing it all, and you kept going. How? You kept your desire in mind and you stayed (mostly) consistent in taking small, repeated action steps. 

And once you’ve done that and landed there, you now own that success. It’s part of who you are. You don’t become a blackbelt or a piano player or a homeowner all in one single step. You set a goal based on a deep desire and you move toward that goal a little at a time on a very regular basis. 

And now, you’re the person who ______________. 
Your success is a part of your new identity. 

Now it’s your new baseline. It’s part of who you are.
