I have amazing VIP clients who come up with truisms during our sessions. I’ll stop on occasion, blurting out, “Oh my gosh, that’d make a great blog post!” That sometimes gets a laugh. 

While laughing a bit during a coaching session is great, I aim to underscore the important points. Recently, I stopped a session to highlight a line my client uttered:  “Yeah! I could get out of it or I could handle it. And sometimes, handling it is easier.”

Here’s what’s up – my client, a serial entrepreneur and amazing leader, chooses to work with me to continue to uplevel his life and his thinking. He regularly attends my Exponential Success Summits, my small-group masterminds held twice a year. He was recently facing a dilemma – the details of which don’t matter, really. We’ve all been there. My client wondered whether he could just back away and hope he don’t have to handle it. He negotiated with himself, “or maybe I could just deal with it all later.” 

My client and I were talking about how he focused on challenges that come up. I don’t believe in problems, by the way. I believe that there are solutions we haven’t seen or leaned into. The lesson of leaning into the not-so-pleasant feelings is a hard one to get. In inviting him to do so, that’s when he exclaimed, “Yeah! I could get out of it or I could handle it. And sometimes, handling it is easier.”

That’s when I wanted to celebrate his great thinking AND his courage. Yes, sometimes – dare I say, most times – handling the situation is easier than backing away from it. No one ever accomplished great things by hiding from the challenges before them. 

Look at any of the success you’ve had. Think about the conditions you were living in or fighting through just before that situation ignited into the success that came about. 

So today, think about what challenge need a little more courage from you. Just focus on one. Then, reflect on how good it’ll feel to get through it. While most people don’t look forward to doing their taxes, most people do like knowing that their taxes are done. Dive into the challenges before you.
