Goals are meant to point you in a direction. You choose what you want to do, to have, or to become. You set out on a path to obtain it. And along the way, the environment changes. 

When you set out on a journey, it’s not uncommon to attain what you first set out to achieve and to feel slightly empty when you attain it. Why? Because the journey changes you. You grow and gain a greater perspective. You find that in climbing the mountain, there’s another mountain that you could climb. 

The journey changes you. You become stronger. You gain new knowledge. And you decide that what you wanted isn’t relevant anymore. What did you truly desire at 10 years old? You might look back now and think about how cute that was. It’s not something you strive to get now, though. You’ve grown, the world has changed, and your perspective has expanded. 

Here, it’s important to remember that the direction matters more than the distance. Sometimes what you want takes more time than you thought it would. Sometimes the path is a bit more circuitous than you thought it would be. And though it’s a long and winding road, are you heading in the right direction? 

How do you know? What makes it right? Are you willing to shift course if something greater comes along? Then you’ll assess, what makes it the right choice, right now? 

Will you stay the course? Will you go after what you truly desire even when it takes longer than you thought? The direction matters more than the distance because in those miles (and years) you learn. How you deal with the distance says everything about your character. 

How far will you go, what price will you pay, how uncomfortable will you allow yourself to become when you pursue what you truly desire? This is where greatness grows.
