Relationships are complex. They don’t have to be complicated. They ARE complex because they operate at so many levels. The cleaner you keep each level, the better they work. Kind of like anything, really. 

Take ownership of the energy you’re bringing to the relationship. If you approach someone with the notion that “they’re always this particular way,” then you’ll likely pull for a response from them that’s close to that particular way. 

If, on the other hand, you’re clear about what you want from – and can give to – the relationship, it’ll go a whole lot smoother.

I worked with one of my clients who was having trouble communicating with his team and with others close to him. I reflected to him how he is feeding the flare ups of drama by his lack of clarity.

Sometimes, it’s just a matter of having a conversation. The key is to become keenly aware of precisely what conversation you’re having. Are you clear in your communication or are you covering your true message somehow? Have you checked that what you intended was actually heard? And did you repeat back what you heard to the other person, again checking for clarity?

When my client started doing this everything changed. He was viewed as more trustworthy and he was able to be a better leader at work and in the community. 

At the end of my sessions, I’ll ask my clients what they loved about what we covered that day. He said that he loved learning to ask himself the question, “what conversation am I having vs. what drama am I creating?”

He took ownership of the outcome and became accountable in each relationship for clarity of direction, and focus.
