Breaking Perceived Limitations
Aug 13, 2025One of my team members is a short guy. I mean his legs reach the ground and all, but in terms of his verticality, he barely tops the five-foot mark. We’ll call him Anthony – we’ll call him that because that’s his name – so Anthony and I were talking about how to identify and go after what you truly desire.
He’s kind of sassy (which I like in my team members) and he said, “yeah, I could never play in the NBA because of my height.” And I stopped him right there.
“What about Muggsy Bogues, Spud Webb, and Earl Boykins?” I asked. Honestly, I’m not much of a sports guy, I just happened to be super quick with my search engine. I put those names out there because I wanted to make a point.
That point is this: So many of the limitations we accept for ourselves are not absolutes. The reason we accept them is that they’re socially reinforced.
Think about some of the common rules (some that you might even live by):
- Only people who work hard get ahead
- Rich people are corrupt
- Nice people finish last
The list goes on and on, really. We’re taught those biases by people whom we relied on to guide us. From parents to social influencers, when there’s a social norm, we so strongly desire to fit in and gain acceptance, that we conform.
THE TRUTH is that if you really desire something, you can make it happen. Short people do make professional teams. People who come from nothing do become wealthy without having to become a “bad” person in the process.
This comes down to what you perceive about yourself and, as a leader,
what you perceive about others.
Think about the opportunities that you’ve set aside because you think that taking the path to get the real outcome you want is out of the question. Where are you deferring your dreams because it’s not “realistic” to pursue them? How might you be interfering in someone else’s desires to expand because you have beliefs about what’s possible or worse, what’s not possible?
For now, think about what you want… really want for yourself. When you get clear on that, the answer IS there. You just have to believe that the path will appear as you take your first step.
Keep making your magic.
I’ll see you here next week!
