Beyond Deserving
Jun 11, 2025
Every so often I’ll check in with myself: “What do I want? What do I truly desire?”
I use my birthday as my personal New Years, and I’ll use other milestones as times to check in with myself.
I make sure that what I want is aligned who I have become.
That’s an important concept – both in organizations and in your personal life: Your journey changes you. What you thought you wanted no longer matches current circumstances.
Here’s the big question to consider – can you want something just because you want it? Or, do you feel like you have to justify what you want? You’ll know the answer to this based on the conversation you have in your head. The voices you hear and how you respond – that’s a huge clue.
You don’t have to prove to anyone how deserving you are. You can want something just because you want it. Now, attaining that thing you want is different from feeling like you deserve it or just kind of want it.
Here’s an example: Let’s say you’re a big city person (not everyone is, and so you can think of the absolute opposite of the example I’m giving). Let’s say you’re a big city person and you’d like a penthouse apartment in New York. The first step to getting something like that is to declare to yourself that’s something you want.
You then move past the feeling of deserving or having to justify the feeling of just wanting it. The next step is to do some research – do you want the entry level penthouse at $1.5M or the mid-range penthouse at $30M or, perhaps it’s the high-end luxury penthouse at $195M. The dollars don’t matter until you decide that’s what you really want.
Maybe it’s a ranch house far away from people and big cities. The same concepts apply. What is it you want?
Don’t justify your desires.
The next step is to determine what you will exchange to receive the thing you want. For most people, that’s time and service in order to earn enough to attain the desired outcome.
Maybe what you want is really a health goal of flexibility, weight, or endurance. What will you trade to have those? A decade ago, when I ran a few half-marathons, I traded my weekends and early mornings for training.
That clarity can exist in every area of your life, from personal relationships to philanthropy, what is it you want?
That kind of clarity, and the support to see your desires through, comes from surrounding yourself with people on their own quest, willing to lift as they lead.
Be the person who lifts others as you make your path. You don’t have to justify your path to others. Nor should anyone else have to justify their path to you. Beyond deserving, you can just want something. And you can help others along the way who want their own something, as well.
You deserve to have what you truly want. That’s controversial for some, I know. As a good human, you deserve to have what you truly want. There’s a path (at least one path) to get there. You deserve. Now, do what it takes to get there!
Keep making your magic and I’ll see you here next week.
And if you want to surround yourself with amazing people who dare to declare and have a spirit of helping others, lifting as they lead, you deserve to explore this amazing small group retreat.
