Most people like order. Even messy, creative people, like things to be organized. Not ALL things, most things. A clear environment gives you clearer thinking. 

Test this out. Imagine sitting by the side of a river. You can hear the water rushing over the rocks. Overhanging trees have shed few leaves. The sun is shining and the breeze cools you. Your thoughts drift and you sense an opening to a creative space you haven’t touched in a while. You feel expansive.

Did any of that imagery resonate with you?

Look around your current environment. Right now, where you’re reading this, is your space set up for expansive thought?

How can you give your best, truly serve others, if you’re not able to relax enough to think, to dream, or even to simply be present, in the now? 

The flip side of being too messy to think straight is being caged by needing order. I call this The Orderly Mental Cage. It’s what happens when nothing can be out; when minimalism goes that bit too far. 

The feeling of being caged really comes down to how much energy you give to your environment. Where you work, eat, relax, or play – are each of these spaces set up for your best thinking? Are you tolerating clutter? Are you overthinking where everything must go before you even start your process? There’s a balance. 

You could become comfortable with, or perhaps simply numb to, how you’ve set up your space. The point of today’s blog post is for you to be deliberate. Take inventory of your surroundings. Set yourself up for success by letting go of what doesn’t belong and by bringing in things (plants, pictures, etc.) that inspire you. 

Clear space, but not all the space. Make it yours. What one thing can you add to make it more your space? What one thing do you need to let go of, swap out, or simply get rid of?

Start there. Then think about your pens, your keyboard, and your lighting.

The more control you have over your space, the more creative and productive you’ll be. 

So, with that I’ll simply say, Keep Making Your Magic.
