Here are two super-powerful leadership statements. You can make them as a leader, as a parent, as a teacher, or simply as a human in the process of becoming: 

• I don’t know (and I’ll find out)
• I need your help

Let’s focus on the first one. And this is going to seem super obvious. 
I’m writing, though, to put it in front of you.

It IS okay not to know something because you can’t know everything. And so, no matter what the circumstance, you don’t need to know everything all at once. 

Now, it’s important to have a level of expertise for whatever you’re being entrusted with. If you’re doing surgery, you need a decent amount of knowledge before beginning. If you’re a medical student, you don’t need to know everything yet. You need to find out. And you need to devote energy to continuous learning.

If you’re leading an organization, it’s best to be aligned and honest. The same is true for leading a family, a scout troupe, or pretty much any organization. You are allowed to say, “It’s a great question. I don’t have that answer right now. I’ll find out and get back to you.”

You learn by exploring what you don’t know.
          You grow through learning.

Again, this is all super obvious. And I bring it here because sometimes you miss what’s obvious. As I write this, my wife engaged me in conversation. While talking to me, she pointed out that I had a cat hair on my glasses, and she asked me how I couldn’t see that. I was too close to it to see it. What was obvious to her wasn’t obvious to me.

I didn’t know, and I was willing to gain her perspective… and her help.
